On March 21, the world community celebrates the International Day of People with Down Syndrome. 

It was not chosen by chance: the twenty-first day of the third month is associated with three copies of the 21st chromosome.  The probability of having a child with such a diagnosis does not depend on the race, place of residence, lifestyle or social status of the parents.

 This day was first celebrated in 2006 at the suggestion of geneticist Stylianos Antonarakis from the University of Geneva.

 Children born with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes in their karyotype instead of the usual 46. Because of this, they have a slightly different appearance, a feature of mental development and social adaptation.

 Lots of “socks -flash mob” takes place all over the world.  People wear socks with different patterns and different colors to feel what it's like to be different from everyone else and to live under the watchful eyes of others.

 Odd socks are a symbol of an extra chromosome, the main symptom of Down syndrome.
